The race for the second season has already started for Deion Sanders and his son Shedeur. Having partnered with NFL experienced coordinators, the Buffs might just have acquired the ingredients for the special sauce that Shedeur and new OC Pat Shurmur are cooking.
In a recent interview in Boulder, the new CU coordinators shared their experiences on stage and the former Giants HC turned CU OC had a few insights ready on Shedeur.
“He’s super talented,” Shurmur said. “He’s a young man, but he’s played a lot of football. So having played for his dad, he’s been a starter at all levels. He knows so much more football than a guy his age. He’s really kind of past his age of quarterback knowledge, that makes it fun.”
“He’s very natural, he can see the game. He understands what he’s looking at. And then we communicate … I probably talk to him more than I talk to my own children. There’s a bond in the communication there so that when things are … getting tight we can communicate.”
With 21 years of NFL coaching experience, Shurmur is certainly in the process of bringing out the Sanders from Shedeur. Not to mention that with each passing day, the two are building a bond that will be on full display next season.
Pat Shurmur Gives Colorado the Edge
Shurmur after replacing Sean Lewis as the new OC on a two-year deal worth $1.65 million, will earn significantly less compared to what he did as the HC of the Giants. However, his 32 years of coaching career would certainly translate into enormous success for Deion Sanders’ team.
Furthermore, Pat Shurmur’s dynamics with Shedeur isn’t new, as he served as the offensive analyst in Colorado in 2023. Not to mention, Shurmur has also called plays for Colorado just last season.
It will be seen how this special sauce of Pat and Shedeur develops the taste of the Buffs offense that fans are eager to watch next season.
How Things Are Going Midseason?
With 10 games played and Colorado boosting an 8-2 record, it is safe to say that Pat Shurmur and Shedeur Sanders’ special relationship has come to fruition.
Shedeur is looking better than ever before and a majority of the credit should go to Shurmur. With Shedeur projected as a top 2025 NFL Draft pick, Shurmur has brought the best out of the QB.
“For any coach and for any player, it starts with the relationship first,” Shurmur said during his appearance at Coach Prime’s Playbook with Romi Bean. “So were fortunate to be able to connect early on when I got here last year and it’s just continued to build. I think there’s a trust factor. We see things a lot the same way. We’re able to tweak things. It’s really pretty free flow on Saturday.”
Shurmur added that plays are never perfectly orchestrated during game days as he always leaves room for some instinctive adjustments. And since the players are all so talented and smart, they are able to make successful plays based on a healthy ratio of practice and instinct.
Shurmur is a big advocate of having a fluid offense and he is able to perfectly format it with the Buffs roster. Not to mention a major part of that fluidity comes from the two-way star Travis Hunter, who is as instinctive and smart as a player can be.
Travis Hunter remains a top contender for the Heisman race considering his dominant role in both offense and defense. Furthermore, the Buffs are on pace to make the Big 12 conference championship game and even the CFP if things go perfectly.
