Sam Darnold underwent a precautionary MRI on his right shoulder and a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com that it showed a reaggravation. Darnold will attempt to manage the ailment and play through it.
The Jets play the Patriots on Monday night in Week 9, which gives the former No. 3 overall pick a little extra time to heal up. Darnold has already missed two games this season and Joe Flacco went 0-2 filing in for him.
The Jets are 0-8 on the season and it’s easy to wonder why Darnold would want to push himself to play. He hasn’t found much success in New York since being drafted out of USC back in 2018 and it may be in his best interest to move on after the season (it would likely be via trade as he has one more year on his contract).
For the Jets, Darnold won’t be the QB of the future if they land the No. 1 pick (or perhaps the No. 2 pick) with Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State’s Justin Fields likely to be atop most NFL draft boards so rushing him back makes little sense.
For fantasy owners, follow the same gameplan with Darnold as you would with betting on the Jets: stay away. There’s no real value here regardless of the case you may talk yourself into.
