The New England Patriots are hoping to get their offensive and defensive leaders back in Week 6 against the Broncos.
Quarterback Cam Newton and cornerback Stephon Gilmore both tested positive for COVID-19. The game against the Broncos was originally supposed to be played in Week 5, but due to Gilmore testing positive, the game was moved to Week 6.
This rescheduling indicates that both players could return this week, but head coach Bill Belichick isn’t sure if they will return this week.
“Yeah, I’m not sure exactly what the schedule is in terms of when those guys will do the things that they need to do,” Belichick said.
Brian Hoyer got the start in place of Newton last week against the Chiefs, finishing 15-24 for 130 yards and an interception. Jarrett Stidham replaced him late in the game and completed five of 13 passes for 60 yards, a touchdown, and a pair of picks. Many feel had Newton played, the Patriots might have been able to defeat the reigning, defending Super Bowl champs.
