If Jimmy Garoppolo is going to miss his third consecutive game with a high ankle sprain in Week 5, the 49ers will have a decision to make as to who gets the start.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan would not commit to either Mullens or Beathard on Monday when he was asked, according to NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco.
If Garoppolo is healthy, Shanahan will have to decide who will serve as the backup. Shanahan hopes to know more on Wednesday in regards to Garoppolo.

During Sunday’s 25-20 loss to the Eagles, Mullens went 18-26 for 200 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. He also lost a fumble.
The final pick he threw was a costly one and on a throw, that should have never happened.
Beathard came in and led a 75-yard scoring drive, completing 9-10 passes to get the score back into a single-digit deficit. San Francisco got the ball back after forcing a three-and-out, but ultimately the hail mary attempt came up empty.
The best-case scenario for the Niners is Garoppolo returns this week against the Dolphins and he remains healthy. Should he miss this game or more, Shanahan will have to decide which backup gives his team the best chance to win.
