Cam Newton of the New England Patriots

Cam Newton has tested positive for COVID-19, ESPN’s Field Yates and Adam Schefter report.

Newton will not play in the team’s game against the Chiefs if it’s played as scheduled on Sunday. The Patriots released a statement declaring that “the player” immediately entered self-quarantine and several additional players, coaches, and staff who have been in close contact with him received tests and they were all negative (teams are not allowed to name which player has contracted the disease, per HIPPA laws).

The expectation is that the Patriots-Chiefs game will be rescheduled, Yates tweets.

The Patriots were scheduled to leave for Kansas City at 1pm EST today and the flight is not going to depart on time. The team could leave later in the day or Sunday morning, however, not making the trip and postponing the game remains a likely option.
