Free Agent Leonard Fournette

Earlier this week, running back Leonard Fournette was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars, just two weeks before the start of the 2020 NFL season.

Jaguars’ head coach Doug Marrone shared with the media why they decided to release Fournette so close to the start of the season.

“Really just trying to take the team and put the best team together from what we’ve seen in our practices so, at the end of the day, I just felt that was the best decision for us as a team,” coach Doug Marrone told reporters on why the decision was made so close to the season opener.

None of the 31 other NFL teams put in a waiver claim on Founette making him a free agent.

The Patriots have expressed interest in the former 2017 fourth overall pick, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic. New England is just one of “several teams” eyeing Fournette, as Mike Garafolo of NFL.com reports that the Buccaneers are making a push to sign the running back.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy was asked about the possibility of adding Fournette, though the team doesn’t seem interested (via NBC Sports Chicago’s JJ Stankevitz).

“We feel very comfortable with where we’re at. We explore everything…but I’ll just say we really like where we’re at right now with our running back room,” Nagy said.

Patriots Running Back Depth Chart

  • Sony Michel is currently penciled in as the Patriots starting running back, but he has a history with injuries dating back to his days at Georgia. He could be in and out of the lineup this season. However, according to Chris Mason of masslive.com, the Patriots had him slim down this off-season after his foot injury.
  • James White is listed as the Patriots backup running back, but is also used in their passing game.
  • Damien Harris is listed as the third running back in the Patriots and could be a fantasy sleeper this season. Due to his ability to run and catch the ball out of the backfield.
  • Rex Burkhead is also on the roster, but probably won’t see the field unless there is injuries to some of the other backs in front of him. However, with Bill Belichick at the helm, you never know.
  • Lamar Miller, who inked a deal with the Patriots in August, lingers on the team, though he’s no lock to make the roster.
