After 20 years with Tom Brady as their starter, the Patriots enter unchartered waters. For bettors and oddsmakers, placing a wager on the Patriots or their new QB comes with a high level of uncertainty.
“The mercurial Cam Newton has been bought in to try and plug the void, but his MVP odds suggest that oddsmakers’ don’t think it will be a Patriots signal-caller who scoops the award,” Pete Watt of Oddschecker.com tells Pro Football Action.

Newton currently has a line of +3200 to win the MVP award, which ranks behind 10 other players, according to OddsChecker’s NFL page.
Back in June when Newton signed in New England, oddsmakers were forced to shorten his MVP odds (+2500 at the time; Fan Duel), as only eight players were listed before him. Bettors haven’t been confident in Newton since with Aaron Rodgers and Kyler Murray now perceived to have a better chance at winning the award.
There’s no guaranteed that Newton even starts for the Patriots, though Jarrett Stidham’s leg injury makes it likely that Newton will be under center in Week 1.
Newton capturing his second MVP this season would be an upset, though he is surely motivated to prove to the Panthers and the other NFL teams that they made a mistake by letting him linger in free agency so long this offseason. If he performs well, he surely won’t have to wait as long for a team to ink him to a deal during the 2021 offseason.
