Cam Newton’s market has cooled despite the fact that he’s embraced a willingness to take a backup role.
The Redskins are the favorite to sign Newton, according to Fan Duel. Newton excelled while playing under Ron Rivera. Yet, ownership wants Dwayne Haskins to win this job and succeed in it. That could keep the club from bringing on Newton more so than any other element, such as the presence of Kyle Allen.
Instead of inking the former MVP, New England will go into the season with Jarrett Stidham, who was the team’s 2019 fourth-round pick, and Brian Hoyer as the lead candidates for their starting spot. Stidham is the favorite to win the gig.
The Seahawks were not listed at Fan Duel early last month. They are now +500 to sign Newton. The Broncos have the same odds.
Chicago (+750), Jacksonville (+750), Las Vegas (+1000), and Los Angeles (+2000) are all listed, though none of the four make sense either because of prior offseason additions at the quarterback position or in the case of the Jaguars, a fascination with Gardner Minshew.
Pittsburgh at +450 could be the winner, though the odds are not exactly favorable. The club was +500 just a month ago. Newton is willing to take a backup role and perhaps the one with the Steelers could lead to a longer-term gig, as Big Ben is getting up there in age. However, Mike Tomlin & Co. appear to be content with their stable of mediocre guys backing up their future hall of fame QB.
Newton, who has a career 182-108 record, made three Pro Bowls during his nine years with the Panthers. His last Pro Bowl came in 2015.
