Playing football in California may not be a reality in 2020 with the state’s restrictions due to coronavirus measures. After the NFL released the schedule, the league made an effort to match California teams with other venues in the event that the state won’t allow games there.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the 49ers could be paired with the Cardinals in Arizona, the Chargers could join the Raiders in Las Vegas, and the Rams could join the Cowboys in Dallas.
However, there’s a rumor circulating that the Rams and Chargers may both be gearing up to play in Las Vegas.
Such a decision would give the Rams the first opportunity to play in Las Vegas Stadium, taking on the Cowboys on Sunday night. The Chargers will play there the following Sunday before the Raiders get their official home-opener on Monday Night Football against the Saints.
Rams Hope to Play in New Stadium
As long as there is football, the Raiders are opening their new stadium in Las Vegas. The Rams continue to be hopeful that they can play in their own freshly constructed stadium.
“Our sole focus is on playing at SoFi Stadium, hopefully in front of our fans,” Rams COO Kevin Demoff said.
There remains optimism that fans will be in that building once it’s ready to host a game. However, that appears to be a pipe dream in California.
